Dear Producer,
My name is Matt Sonic and for the past 14 years I have been an electronic music producer, writing house, trance, drum n bass, hip-hop, and breaks for various DJ’s and collectives. After several years producing for the underground dance scene, I decided to use my extra time to finish SonicTransfer Premium. I live in Tennessee, USA.
I never seriously played an instrument as a child but was very curious when, in 1993, I discovered computer sequencers. I wanted to make music like what I heard on records, but found that my tracks always sounded lacking. I knew nothing about electronic music production, and assumed there must be a simple “How To Produce” guide. Boy was I wrong! I went to the library and checked out books, but the books all seemed to focus on recording and never gave explicit step-by-step guidance. I kept thinking there must be a good book for electronic music producers like me, but I couldn’t find one. They were all either very basic, or very technical, and none of them told how to create the music that I liked, or defined the dozens of production words I kept hearing. I wasn’t trying to become a great producer, but I didn’t want to be a “bad” producer.
The SonicTransfer Program got started in 2004 when I found myself answering the same kinds of production questions again and again. If I didn’t know something, I would look it up and I ended up reviewing over 30 books and videos, taking seminars, and talking to and collaborating with many other producers. I wrote a small collection of tutorials, shared them with friends, and became a “student of music production”. Soon after, we started getting calls and emails from people all over the globe wanting more guides and we could tell that the training was helping beginning and intermediate producers. The popularity of the guides led to the idea of putting it on the internet, and SonicTransfer was born in June 2005. As of this writing, in September 2007, we have been visited by over 100 countries and every U.S. state, and may surpass six million “hits” this year.
SonicTransfer is designed to help make it easy for beginning and intermediate producers to become better producers so they can have more enjoyment and satisfaction from the music creation experience. There is a great deal of free information at SonicTransfer. If it helps you, and you want more similar information that can make your production experience more fun and rewarding, try SonicTransfer Premium. The cost for a 365 day subscription is less than you would pay for most books, and it is less than you would pay for almost every music production training video.
SonicTransfer is designed to help producers write better music. But I would like to share with you an important lesson I’ve learned: Don’t sacrifice fun or ethics just to create successful music. If you follow this advice you will always enjoy producing.
I wish you many great songs,
Matt Sonic
