Envelopes

Envelopes are used to manipulate a effect, instrument, or mixer control over time. There are many types of envelopes. Essentially, an envelope represents a voltage or energy level. Music applications often allow you manipulate the graph of an envelope to make adjustments to mixer and effect controls. Also, envelope generators are often used on synthesizers and samplers to shape sounds.

EQ
(Key Concept)

(a.k.a. Equalizer). An EQ is a specialized filter that is used to cut or boost frequencies. It is one of the most important tools for mixing. In order to produce professional-sounding mixes, you must understand how to use an equalizer.

Exciter

(a.k.a. Harmonic Exciter, Enhancer). An exciter is an effect that applies distortion to the high frequencies of an audio signal. It is often used to add a pleasing color to a final mix. Exciters are often used during the mixing and mastering process.

Filter

A device that allows some frequencies of an audio signal to pass through unaffected and reduces the rest.

Flange

A flange is an effect caused by two identical copies of an audio signal and delaying one of them. This produces phase cancellations that can be very appealing. Flanging is often used to add a little spice to tracks during mixing.

Fletcher Munson Curve

The Fletcher-Munson Curve is a chart that shows the human ear's sensitivity to frequencies at the different volume levels. It shows that humans perceive less bass and treble at low volume levels. You should keep this in mind when mixing.

Free

There are a wealth of free software and training options for electronic music producers.

French House
