I think it would be cool to pick a certain sound out of a song, every now and then, and learn how to get that sound. Of course I'm a newbie to this whole synth thing (been playing guitar for 10+years) but there are a lot of sounds that I just don't know how to get. I've been listening to a lot of Crystal Method and some of the sounds on the Vegas album are just cool.
Currently I'll just take a preset in a vst and mess it up until I like it, but it sure does take a long time and a lot of knob twiddling.

First of all Great forum Matt, my first time here..
I started producing about a month ago, on advice of a friend of mine who's been workin' on it for 4 years now. So I'm a total noob..I don't worry that much about the effect on sounds yet, but more on the composition of a track..I'd like to know if there's a sort of 'standard order' or composition in which a kick, bassline & synth appear in a track more or less?
This could be off topic, but my friend works with Orion, created by Synapse Audio Software. However, I don't see this program on any forum, but he sure get's great sounds out if it.
Do you know any other Orion users, or maybe specific information about how getting the best out of it?
Greetz

This really is a great site. I have yet to find another site close to the content this site provides.
I am completely new to music (not just electronic music production) and to be honest I have found everything offered to be helpful.
I need tips on arrangement and structure, I need tips on effects, and I need tips on mixing so I would love to see more. Maybe put up a beginner intermediate and advance user section so you can have information about all different topics. Also I would love to see a weekly or bi weekly music analysis and decomposition of a song (you know something to really get in there and explain how the effects were made, why the sound works etc)
Finally I would love to see more information about concepts and how they are done. For example using the LFO to make a vibrating sound because I don't use software I use an Electribe to make my music so just knowing the general concept behind the effects allows me to try to do the same on my hardware.
Again thanks for the site and keep up the good work

i think mixing & mastering are the most important & least understood subjects where as song structure & arrangment , composition are more of a personal thing which is something you feel rather than something you learn

While I think you are right to a certain extent swamp, I still think you need to learn some of the theory behind structure, compostion and arrangment before you can really start to express what you feel. You know, just as guidelines.

I've learned a lot of music theory from this source,
http://www.dolmetsch.com/introduction.htm . To learn more about song structures I recommend the reading of the book "6 STEPS to songwriting success" by Jason Blume. I bought this book at Amazon for 22 USD together with 20 other ones about a year ago.
Understanding basic music theory and song structures I hardly recommend the book "Melody in Songwriting: Tools and Techniques for Writing Hit Songs (Berklee Guide)". This book teaches you melody theory concepts worth GOLD and costs about 22/25 USD.
Arrangment needs a lot of practice and is best done watching tutorials. I learned how to arrange music with tutorials from
http://www.todaysbeats.com/ where I bought the 11 sessions for about 230 USD. These tutorials teaches you how to create patterns and instrument selections for hip-hop music. They are sometimes a little bit hard to understand as the teacher lacks music theory and doesn't always show all the details clearly in the sessions, but I couldn't have reached my skills without them in such a short time. For sure there are other sources like this for other genres.
It took me about 8 months to learn arrangments, 2 months to study music theory, 10 months of practicing creating complete songs and here I am trying to improve my producing skills.
Please, listen to my latest song at
http://myspace.com/vikingtomahawk and reply with feedback.
